Germany Visit Holiday Season 2010/2011

January 17th, 2011 by

If only these were filled with beer Great visit to Dieter by the Amick family including Tyler and Mindy.  Never saw the sun or the ground (too much snow)!  Lots of great food and beer.  Visited Dachau (more educational than depressing), NeuHello Thereshuanstein (King Ludwig’s fantasy castle)Dachau main gate , Alte Pinakothek (the old museum in Munich – more Rubens than anywhere – King Ludwig designed the museum around the massive “The Last Judgement” by Rubens) – and the BMW museum.   Spent New Year’s eve on the Oktoberfest grounds with many massive tents and four bands playing,  360 degrees of fireworks at midnight – truly amazing!!!    Flights all on time, massive jet-lag both ways.

In Ukraine

July 5th, 2010 by

From Munich, we flew in to the airport in Kiev, Ukraine, where Vlad’s uncle kindly picked us up. The next day, we wandered out to see Kiev’s Golden Gate, which was a lot of fun to climb inside. Nearby was the kitty statue pictured here with me.

To get to the Golden Gate and just about everywhere else that we visited in Kiev, we went by subway. Subways in Ukraine tend to be highly stylized, with mosaics and marble and granite used to beautiful effect. This seems to be fairly common in eastern Europe, and it was one of my favorite aspects of the trip. A few subways were also very deep, presumably for protection against nuclear warfare, with high-speed escalators just to get people in and out in a reasonable amount of time.

Valentine’s Day up on the mountain

February 14th, 2010 by

I convinced mom and dad to get out of their comfort zones and take a cross country ski class with me on Mount Hood. I’m still shocked that they actually agreed to do it, but in the end we all had a lot of fun. The class was only 2 hours long but we managed to take away quite a bit of knowledge. We even journeyed out by ourselves after finishing our beginner’s class exploring a few different trails.

I can’t believe I made the train today. My bus came a couple minutes early and I was pretty sure I was screwed. The only other bus I could possibly take was ten minutes up the hill and even then I doubted it could get me to the train on time.

So then I whooped out my tubephone and discovered that the ten-minutes-away bus was leaving in less than five. And since I had nothing to lose at this point, I huffed it up the hill with my overfilled backpack and suitcase.

Wouldn’t you know it? I just barely made it. Which is good too, cuz the train also left early (though, with me on it). Hooray for creative bussing!

And now, if you’ll direct your attention to the eastern sidebar… and assuming you have logged into your Raving Amicks account, you will notice that I have updated our stalker page for Mason. Please peruse it at your leisure.

Birthday Flowers

June 6th, 2009 by

Thanks for the awesome birthday flowers, Amick Parents!

Tyler and I have been idly playing with the new camera, Birthday Flowers but there are so many crazy settings and we haven’t had a chance to take it outside of the apartment for a real test-run yet. Here’s a shot I took this morning of the flowers, though. Since it’s super gray and overcast outside, this was taken in horrendous indoor “lighting” and the only edits were a simple crop. Came out pretty sharp and amazing considering the conditions!

Hey everyone, my phone was stolen about a week ago, I need to call Sprint and I should have another soon. Happy Mother’s day mom, sorry I didn’t call…but I love you of course. In the meantime, who can guess what movie this is from ( Dad you should know this one, we watched it together once in the living room! ) — “Do you have any Tobacco?” Ok.

Today was the Bookstore Holiday Open house in which I dressed up as santa claus handing out candy canes and flyers (which I designed myself!).

Chasing Mason

November 16th, 2008 by

Mindy and I were able to catch up with Mason today, so we interrogated him a bit and I’ve added it all to the “Mason’s Whereabouts” link on the sidebar. Keep in mind that the link will not work unless you are logged in, for obvious reasons. Here’s a picture to whet your appetite: Bein' a badass at the Ale House

And he’ll be coming with Dieter and Mindy and I for Thanksgiving.

Halloween 2008

snake halloweenmom halloween First costume party the Mom unit and I have ever attended.  I came with my snake and your Mom came as a Mouseketeer (sort of).  Anyway, Sam the band director (who was fighter pilot) gave her some stuff to put on.  Made her look like Amelia Earhart.
